Hatchlings on the way to the sea

Last year, on a morning after a nice mexican party (drinking tequila and mexican beer, eating vegetarian taco, having a cool Pinata), I was almost frightened when Amanda came running in to the camp screaming; "Roy, you better get your camera". And then in almost panic running around finding her own camera and somehow managed to tell me, and the rest of the gang ( that she woke up ) that there was some hatchlings on their way to the sea.

Many of us grabbed a camera, hoped it was our own and stumbled down the path to the sea, screamin' and shouting luckily. We was finally going to see hatchlings, if we could make it in time. and yeah we did. I managed to make this video with my photocamera before it managed to get to the seas and disappear from us. But I have taken it from amanda's facebook page and the short clip is the amazing race to the sea. It was a blast, and I wanna see more, many more of them again this year.

I wish myself good luck

Why help the loggerhead, or any other turtles?

Last year I spent several weeks helping the Archelon, in their work to protect the Loggerhead turtle. Durning my stay I was lucky enough to see turtles twice, one adult in the harbour of Chania and two hatchlings on their struggle to reach the sea.
So a good question is; what made me do this and what makes me go back there once again? First of all I believe that every animal on earth have the right to excist together with us humans here on earth, second the turtles are amasing animals. If you're lucky enogh to see them in their real life, under water, where it seems like they are weightless and navigates so easily all around, you will be lost. I was, I was totally lost and I wanna go back to help them again and again, if I have the chance.
But why do they need help? That answer will come. From one day to another I will unfold many of the mysteries the Loggerhead and why they need the help.

Have a nice time waiting.

making a shift of focus

Less than 24 hours after I created this blog, I have changed it. From being about everything, I have changed the focus to be about turtles, people that work with turtles and other issues concerning this. In the summer when I'm so lucky to be working with them I hope I'll be posting stuff about camplife or about what we do when we don't work. Crete is an astonishing place, so there will be more than enough to write about. All it takes is some time...

My turtlesummer

In july I'm leaving for Crete for the second year in a row, and as last year I'll be volunteering for Archelon, the sea turtle protection society of Greece. They work on the beaches in many places in Crete and here on the beaches west of Chania is one of the areas. This year I will be there for about a month from mid-july to mid august. I still have to make excact arrangements for my travel.
In a series of blogarticles here I will let you know all about the work we will do and also a lot about the turtles.
